The Camino de Santiago, throughout the Middle Ages, was traversed by people from all over Christendom, which allowed the circulation and diffusion of ideas, uses and customs. Its role in building a European culture is unquestionable.

Tomar
Tomar, for its privileged situation - central point between Lisbon and Porto, with defense and hospitality guarantee by the Castelo dos Templários since the century. XII and later by the Order of Christ - it was one of the fundamental points of the Portuguese Way. One of the main accesses to the castle and convent of Christ is called Calçada de Santiago. This toponym, as well as several reports written in the century. XVII and XVIII document that the Way passed through Tomar and the Convento de Cristo, a monument today classified as World Heritage.
This route that starts at the Grou-Asseiceira, passing in the chapel of S. Lourenço, through the Convento de Cristo, historic center, Gothic bridge of Peniche - Casais, Soianda and Chão das Eiras is duly marked with yellow arrows.
