It was built between 1953 and 1955, but contains architectural elements from a Renaissance chapel five centuries older - the Chapel of Casal de Santo António, probably from 1459, existing near the Pegões Aqueduct. In 1924, under the aegis of the Union of Friends of the Monuments of the Order of Christ, the controlled dismantling of the stonework of the chapel proceeded.

In 1953, with the construction of a Social District (today, 1st of May), the current chapel was built with architectural elements from the original: main portal and the ribbed chancel. Meanwhile, the Union of Friends of the Order of Christ gave, from the estate of other demolished buildings, a few more elements to enrich the work: the rose window, the overhangs of the doors, the renaissance canmtarias of the service door and the Hispano-Arab tiles of the altar from the chimney of an old building in Praça da República.
