Description Sesimbra

Booking.com

Picturesque fishing village located next to a sheltered bay, Sesimbra was founded on top of the hill, around the Moorish castle that the 1st king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques conquered in 1165. This castle fell back into the Moors' possession in 1191 , having been regained during the reign of D. Sancho I (13th century) who donated it to the Order of Santiago for defense and settlement. Later, in the century. XVIII has been restored, being now a must-visit point from where you can admire a truly stunning landscape over the town and the sea.

It was the fishing wealth of the Sesimbra sea that caused the population to descend from the top of the hill and move to its surroundings, making this village one of the main fishing ports in the region.

It was also the sea that during the century. XX attracted outsiders who were looking for the excellent sheltered beaches with excellent conditions for the practice of water sports, which turned this peaceful place into a busy summer resort.

Nearby, the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Cabo Espichel deserves a visit, next to which on the cliff some dinosaur footprints are visible.

A special highlight also deserves the excellent regional cuisine in which fresh seafood and fish are the main element, and which can be enjoyed in the many restaurants here.
