Sistelo, ancient medieval dust, still preserves all the ancestral rural beauty. Known as “little Portuguese Tibet”, it has in its fabulous terraces a unique identity mark in the whole country; shaped over hundreds of years by human intervention, they are the ex-libris of the population and true symbols of the secular coexistence between Man and Nature, creating a landscape of characteristics and unique.

Arcos de Valdevez
Retaining the land, guiding the waters through a specific irrigation system and creating veritable “stairs” of vertical access, the Sistelo terraces represent the smart and sustainable way of obtaining agricultural and livestock income, being the stage for the creation of the well-known indigenous breeds of Cachena and Barrosâ cows.
The central area of the village also has a strong memory of the rhythms of the time, with a nucleus of granaries, a fountain and typical houses, in addition to the unique and mysterious Casa do Castelo de Sistelo, built in the middle of the 19th century.
The exceptionality and high patrimonial value of Sistelo led to a “Cultural Landscape” classification process, in the form of a National Monument / Site of National Interest, the first of its kind in Portugal, covering the places of Church, Standard and Porta Cova.
