Today what remains of the medieval Monastery of Ermelo is the church and the ruins of the cloisters and is one of the most emblematic cases of our Romanesque art. The origins of this temple are immensely debatable, which corresponds to the difference of a century.

In one of the perspectives, some authors indicate that the monastery belongs to a greater antiquity than that which the documents authorize. In the early years of the 12th century, under the rule of D. Teresa, the countess decided to found a monastery of Benedictine monks designed to house noble women.
The other perspective points to a work projected a century later, with three naves and a tripartite headboard, of which there are still traces. The quadrangular chapels and the decoration of some capitals and modillions are themes that are repeated in late churches in the interior of Entre-Douro e Minho and the ornamentation of the bases of the columns inside the chancel.
