Description

Located on a mountainous elevation on the left bank of the River Âncora and surrounded by three walls, from which several stretches are still visible, although little protruding from the ground. Built in proto-history, for military and residential use, nowadays a historical-cultural landmark. These are the ruins of a fortified town with two defensive walls, with traces of Roman occupation.

The archaeological excavations carried out at this site by Christopher Hawkes, Francisco Martins Sarmento, Abel Viana and Armando Coelho demonstrate the ordering of the urban space evident in its defensive and public service structures, as well as a strong organization of the iron reproduction and metallurgy system .
