In a walk through the village, we must return to the past, in the patrimony field, the Castle of Melgaço, built in 1170, by order of D. Afonso Henriques. The castle has a circular plant, not very common in Portugal. Three turrets had the mission to defend the fortress, crowned by a central tower of menagem with balcony. The castle is compartmentalized in three courtyards, with two different doors. The fence that protected the village, and of which some rags still exist, was built in 1263 by D. Afonso III.
