Branda da Aveleira, one of the many brands in the highest areas of the region, has been used since the 12th century, in the spring and summer, as a grazing bland. Located in the vicinity of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, on the borders of the municipalities of Melgaço, Monção and Arcos de Valdevez...

Melgaço
It was here that, every year, at the hottest time of the year, brandeiros climbed with their herds, leaving the land at lower altitudes available for growing corn and beans. We can easily see these green fields full of sheep, cattle, horses and even goats.
Around the 60's and 70's, emigration left the village semi-abandoned but, years later, the inhabitants returned, taking advantage of community funds to requalify their homes for village tourism. Currently, we can find here about eighty cardenhas (10 recovered for Tourism) - small rustic stone buildings where brandeiros stayed overnight, the lower floor being used for cattle, which allowed to heat the upper floor. Walking along the parallel path that separates them, we find a small and sublime lake, very used in summer for a good swim.
A truly idyllic place, which you will certainly not forget.
