In the municipality of Melgaço, tourists are faced, at every step, with buildings of undeniable architectural and historical value. In Paderne, more precisely in the place of the Convent, there is the Church of the Convent of Paderne, also known as Church of the Divine Savior, belonging to the old Paderne Convent.
lugar do Convento, Paderne
Melgaço
The convent originally belonged to a female Order which, in 1225, was replaced by the Order of Canons Ruling Saint Augustine. It was this Order, in fact, that forty years later, built the Romanesque church.
Of this former convent, only three faces of the cloister remain, which, despite being in ruins, are worth a visit for the superb architectural details.
Then visit the interior of the church - passing through the interesting Romanesque portal -, where you will be dazzled by the 17th century tiles on one of the walls, with the gilded altarpiece of the chancel and with several images in polychrome wood. Of the primitive church, dating from the 12th century, there is only a fragment of a frieze and an interesting capital where the Descent of Christ into limbo is represented.
Do not leave the place without strolling around the outside churchyard, surrounded by a wide square where silence reigns.
