The Monção fortress, a national monument by decree of 16 June 1910, provides a peaceful and inspiring “walk” in the company of a stunning “look” over the river Minho, the Galician bank and the Parque das Caldas.
Castelo de Monção
Monção
From the Medieval castle of Monção built in the time of D. Dinis (1305 to 1308), there is only one stretch left next to the Néris promenade. Due to the intensification of armed wars, a more extensive wall was built, comprising five doors: that of Salvaterra, Rosal, Fonte or Caldas, S. Bento and those of Sol or Milagres.
The current walls are the result of a modification that occurred in the 2nd half of the 17th century, having been broken in three parts from the 19th century. XIX: for the construction of the railway, for the opening of Avenida das Caldas and for the widening of the road towards Melgaço.
