The building project was commissioned in 1893 from the architect António Adelino de Magalhães Moutinho, starting the works in the following year, and the inauguration took place on September 19, 1896.

It experienced worse days in the 80s of the 20th century, a situation that led to its acquisition by the Municipality, for a recovery and restoration intervention, with the reopening in 1999.
Today, it works as a public cultural service space, with regular programming between the months of September and May, in the most varied areas, with emphasis on theater, music and dance.
They are responsible for managing the council's cultural agenda, publicizing and disseminating major events, programming in auditoriums and open spaces, organizing exhibitions and conferences, producing all kinds of shows and planning the cultural activity registered in the county and activity in partnership with diverse institutions.
