Located in the mouth of the Lima River, it dates back to the 15th century. In the fort we can see Manueline architectural elements, namely the so-called “Torre da Roqueta”, located in the southwest bastion of the current fortress.
Castelo Santiago da Barra
Viana do Castelo
.It is thought that it will date from the reign of D. Afonso III, the first fortification placed in the mouth of the mouth of the Lima River, although the oldest safe date is already from the 15th century, when a fortress was built there, which would have been completed already during the reign of D. Manuel I, as suggested by some Manueline architectural elements, namely the so-called "Torre da Roqueta", located in the southwestern bastion of the current fortress.
At the end of the 16th century, the fortress underwent successive improvement works, having already been under Spanish domination, during the reign of Philip II (Philip I of Portugal), which was built the current polygonal plant fortress, from a project by Filippo de Terzi, the most famous military building designer of that time.
