Inaugurated on June 30, 1878, at the height of the iron architecture, under the risk and calculations of the prestigious Casa Eiffel, the metal bridge over the Lima River not only allowed rail traffic, but also replaced the old wooden bridge that connected the São Bento terreiro in Viana to the left bank of the river Lima (Darque).

Five hundred and sixty-three meters long and six meters wide, it took more than 2,000,000 kilos of iron to build the trays that rest on nine pillars in granite stonework, the foundations of which reach 22 meters.
