Across the Tâmega River, the Roman bridge is one of the most characteristic images of the city. The 14th-century castle houses the Archaeological and Epigraphic Museum. The forts of San Francisco and St. Neutel (18th century), the Parish Church (of Romanesque origin) and the Misericordia Church (Baroque) are worth a visit. Look at the original windows of the houses on Rua Direita

The county of Chaves is very old and proof of this are several traces of prehistory (from the Neolithic and Chalcolithic periods to 3000 BC)

The people who stood out most were the Romans, who built walls around the settlement, built the majestic Trajan bridge, encouraged the use of medicinal waters, and installed thermal spas and explored minerals, auriferous filaments and other natural resources.

In the year 79 AD, the current territory of the city of Chaves was elevated to the category of Municipality, being designated Aquae Flaviae, that is, Water Flavia in honor of the emperor Tito Flávio Vespasiano Augusto and the excellence of the thermal waters.

Today this city has created a pioneering project in the Iberian Peninsula, the Eurocity Chaves-Verín project, being a new model of cooperation between these two cities, both economically, as well as tourism and social level.

Known as the "capital of Alto Tâmega", Chaves is considered as a gastronomic destination of excellence due to its continued commitment to traditional products with great quality. The highlights are the sausages (sausage, sausages, alheiras), ham, the crayons of Chaves (made with puff pastry and meat), the meat barrosã, the migas to Transmontana, papos de anjo, the broth a Trasmontana, feijoada to the Transmontana, the stew Transmontano and the folar of Chaves (kind of bread baked with meats).

For those who enjoy history, nature and good food, there is nothing better than visiting this city that has so many charms to discover.
