Torre de Menagem do Castelo de Chaves

Torre de Menagem do Castelo de Chaves

National monument since March 22, 1938, there were several adversities that prevailed in the history of Castelo de Chaves. Of what remains of it, only the Torre de Menagem remains as a living history of troubled times of the Christian reconquest and of a royal dowry for the resolution of the various political problems between Portuguese and Spanish.

Chaves

Description

It is with D. Afonso Henriques, that Chaves joins Portuguese territory, being granted a charter in 1258 by diploma from D. Afonso III, who married in Chaves with D. Beatriz illegitimate daughter of D. Afonso X de Castela. With the elevation to the category of town that the charter granted him, consecrating Chaves as a population, economic and strategic nucleus in the defense of the borders of the Portuguese territory, there was an urgent need for the reconstruction of the castle and donjon by the time of D Dinis.

Outside, a garden was built, where some pieces from the Museum of the Flavian Region are on display. The garden is limited by walls built when the village was fortified, during the Restoration Wars. From the site we can observe an excellent panoramic view of the entire valley of Chaves.
