Description Murça

Located in the heart of the region of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro, the county of Murça dates back to the Palaeolithic period. Since that time, its territory has probably been populated continuously, as there are many indications of different periods of occupation.

It is worth to admire the magnificent pillory in front of the Town Hall, which was formerly a convent of Benedictine nuns and is located near the Mother Church, built between 1707 and 1734. The façade of the Church of Mercy is equally worthy of interest.

Murça is well known for producing olive oil but wine production is the basis of the local economy, due to being located between the Demarcated Region of Douro and Trás-os-Montes.

The richness of its historical-cultural heritage and its beautiful landscapes to the Tinhela River, constitute a business card for nature lovers.
