Founded in 1513, the brotherhood of Misericórdia de Braga had permission from D. Diogo de Sousa, archbishop of the city, to settle in one of the chapels of the cloister of the Cathedral, then designated as the Chapel of Jesus of Misericord. However, in the middle of the century, the space available to the brotherhood became small, so in 1558 the brothers decided to build a new temple, located next to the Cathedral. The design of this temple is attributed to the architect Manuel Luís, master of Porto author of the main chapel of Misericórdia do Porto (RUÃO, Carlos, 1996, pp. 202-205).

Braga
The construction of the temple was started around 1560, with the date "1562" engraved on the main portal, probably indicating the date on which the facade ended.
