Casa da Cultura da Trofa

Casa da Cultura da Trofa

The building of the Casa da Cultura da Trofa is distinguished in Largo do Souto da Lagoa by its different housing model, both in shape and in volume, from all the other buildings there. Its facade, covered with green tiles, develops in a pronounced verticality, highlighting the dimension of the spans organized in symmetry.

Trofa

Description

The history of this building began in the city of Porto, in 1867, the year in which its construction was approved, at Rua do Laranjal. This street would later be extinguished and its building demolished, following the urban restructuring project that, at the beginning of the century. XX, transformed the city center of Porto, giving rise to Avenida dos Aliados.

In one of the exhibition rooms of the Casa da Cultura it is possible to visit two milestones, classified as a National Monument. They were found in the 40s of the last century during the works for the construction of the railway, having then been placed in the Ponte da Trofa Velha. They moved to the Casa da Cultura da Trofa in order to be preserved. They belonged to VIA XVI, the Roman road that connected Bracara Augusta (Braga) - the capital of Conventus Bracarense, belonging to the province of Galaecia (more or less covered the territory corresponding to the current North of Portugal and Galicia) - to Cale (Porto), ending in Olisipo (Lisbon). They indicate mile XXI.
