The Museu dos Terceiros is located in two religious houses associated with the Franciscan Order: the extinct Convent of Santo António dos Capuchos and the building of the Third Order of São Francisco. The remaining part of the convent, founded at the end of the 15th century by the mayor of Ponte de Lima, D. Leonel de Lima, is formed by the church, chapel of Senhora da Graça and the sacristy.

The conventual church has some vestiges of the initial period, but received important changes between the 17th and 19th centuries, especially in terms of filling. The Church of the Third Order, built between 1745-1747, was filled in the following decades with altarpieces, pulpits and valances of rococo design.
Later, in the early 19th century, the chair and the pipe organ, both of neoclassical features, were added. The museum was established in the 70s of the 20th century, with the creation of the Limiano Institute - Museu dos Terceiros. In 2002, the Municipality and the aforementioned Institute signed a protocol for the restoration and joint management of the space. It reopened to the public in 2008, being a reference in sacred art in the north of the country.
