Praça da Republica
Viana do Castelo
The Praça da República Fountain was built, or at least completed in 1559, being the work of the master stonemason João Lopes "the old man", the same as a few years earlier he executed the Caminha fountain and, most likely, some of the similar fountains that we can find in Galician cities like Pontevedra.
It was for several centuries the point of supply of drinking water to the population of Viennese and, for its monumentality and location, one of the urban references of the borough.
