From the 13th / 14th century, the castle and the village of Monforte de Rio Livre were a landlord of the brother of King D. João V, Prince D. Francisco. It owes its name to the existence on the site of a so-called medieval municipality that was extinct in the last century.

The largest part of the set currently built dates back to the end of the XIII and the first mitig next. Inside was the Casa da Câmara, the parish church and the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Prado, buildings that are still preserved in the 18th century.
The tower, built in 1312, is the main element that falls and gives the castle its par excellence military image.
