Chaves

Description

Located by the Tâmega River and close to the border, Chaves was always important from a strategic-military point of view, having heroically resisted the annexation to Castile in the 19th century. XVI. Later, in the century. XIX, it was here that Napoleon's invading troops suffered their first defeat on Portuguese soil.

Examples of this past as a stronghold are the castle and its keep, as well as the medieval quarter within the walls.

The city grew up around its thermal baths and its Roman bridge in Trajan, which is considered the oldest in Portugal.

The architectural heritage is living proof of its important historical and cultural legacy.

With 80 kilometers of walking routes to get to know the county.
The project "Visiting trails for the natural and cultural heritage of Chaves" consists of six small and medium-sized route trails, in a total of about 80km of rural paths, which allow you to pass over the Tâmega River, visit the Casa-Museu João Vieira, churches and sanctuaries, discover ancient smuggling routes, Roman roads, windmills and railways.

Chaves is also known for its gastronomic richness, of which sausages and ham stand out.
