Started in 1732, during the reign of D. João V, in baroque and neoclassical style, it had the participation of architects such as Cannevari, Manuel da Maia, Custódio Vieira and Carlos Mardel.

Description

It is one of the most notable works of hydraulic engineering ever, designed to celebrate the entry of water in Lisbon. From the source, 2 km from Belas, to the Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras, including the branches, the Aqueduct extends for about 59 km.

Worth mentioning: the Arcaria do Vale de Alcântara, with 35 arches (21 full and 14 broken), the Arco das Amoreiras, in the shape of a triumphal arch, based on a full arch flanked by Doric pilasters, which support an entablature with votive tombstone and triangular pediment, and the Mãe d'Água das Amoreiras, reception reservoir.

In operation since 1748, it was deactivated in the 3rd quarter of the century. XX, having been reopened to the public in 1986.
