The first references to this place date from the 11th century and mention a large rural property, eventually fortified. In 1212, the castle already existed, as it was conquered this year by Afonso IX de Leão, in the process of allegedly defending the rights of his daughter, Infanta D. Teresa.

For nineteen years, the fortress was held by the Castilian monarch, only being returned to the Portuguese crown in 1231, the date on which the Sabugal peace agreement was signed. The strategic position of Santo Estêvão determined that some of the contacts between the two peninsular crowns pass through him, as happened in 1253, when D. Afonso III went to the castle to receive his future wife, D. Beatriz. Fuente: https://www.chaves.pt/
